  • 1 pound Beef Sirloin or Flank Steak substitute chicken or pork for a different flavor, or opt for tofu or cauliflower for a vegetarian option
For the Batter
  • 1 cup Cornstarch suitable for gluten-free preparation
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour replace with gluten-free flour if needed
  • 1 large Egg use a flax egg or aquafaba for a vegan version
  • 1/2 cup Water adjust for batter consistency
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil choose any neutral oil that can withstand high heat
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce substitute tamari for gluten-free version
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar can be swapped with white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Hoisin Sauce swap with extra soy sauce and honey if desired
  • 1 tablespoon Chili Sauce adjust according to spice preference
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar optional if reducing sugar intake
  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic fresh is best
  • 1 teaspoon Minced Ginger fresh is best
For the Vegetables
  • 1 medium Onion sliced
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper sliced
  • 1 to taste Red Chilies optional for additional kick
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil crucial for authentic flavor
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Green Onions for garnish

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Begin by thinly slicing the beef sirloin or flank steak against the grain into juicy strips.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine cornstarch, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper, then add the egg and water.
  3. Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or wok, heating it until it reaches around 350°F (175°C).
  4. Dip the beef strips into the batter, coating them evenly, then fry in batches until golden brown.
  5. In a separate wok, heat sesame oil and add minced garlic and ginger, then toss in onion and bell pepper.
  6. Add soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar, simmer until thickened.
  7. Carefully add the crispy beef strips into the sauce, tossing gently to coat evenly.
  8. Remove from heat, transfer to a serving platter, and garnish with fresh chilies and green onions.
