Ingredients

For the Beef Mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey for a lighter dish
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 inch ginger grated
  • to taste black pepper
  • to taste salt
For the Veggie Base
  • 1/2 head cabbage shredded
For the Saucy Goodness
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce optional
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil or vegetable oil for milder taste
For Garnishing
  • to taste green onions sliced
  • to taste sesame seeds optional

Equipment

  • large skillet

Method

Directions
  1. Start by preparing your ingredients: shred half a head of cabbage and set it aside. Chop one medium onion, mince three cloves of garlic, and grate a one-inch piece of fresh ginger.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add one pound of ground beef. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  3. Once the ground beef is cooked, add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 2-3 minutes, until the onion turns translucent.
  4. Stir in the shredded cabbage, 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce (if using), 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, grated ginger, and a sprinkle of black pepper.
  5. Continue cooking the mixture on medium heat for about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cabbage is tender yet still has a slight crunch.
  6. Remove the skillet from heat, garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds, then serve immediately.
